Most people do not think about their bones until one breaks. Osteoporosis develops silently over years before it becomes visible on a scan. By the time bone density has declined enough to cause fractures, the process has been underway for a long time. Ayurveda described this as Asthikshaya, the gradual depletion of bone tissue, driven by Vata dosha imbalance, and prescribed a specific formulation for it.
Panchtikta Ghrit. Five bitter herbs in A2 Gir Gau Ghee, described in Sarangdhar Samhita, used in classical Ayurveda for bone health, skin disorders, eczema, ulcers, and systemic detoxification. The five herbs are Neem (Nimba), Kantkari, Guduchi, Patola, and Vasa, all classified as Tikta (bitter) in classical Ayurveda. The Tikta Rasa has a specific affinity for bone tissue in classical Ayurvedic pharmacology, nourishing Asthi Dhatu and reducing the inflammatory processes that cause bone depletion. A randomised controlled clinical study at TN Medical College and BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai assessed Panchtikta Ghrit as an add-on therapy to Vitamin D3 and calcium supplements in 80 patients with osteopenia, measuring bone mineral density across the lumbar spine, femur neck, and forearm. The group receiving Panchtikta Ghrit alongside standard supplements showed improvement in BMD T-scores and a significant decrease in osteoclast activity, measured through bone-specific biomarkers TRAP-5b and osteocalcin. Osteoclasts are the cells responsible for breaking down bone. Reducing their activity is how bone density is preserved. The ghee delivery system is not incidental. Bone tissue nourishment in classical Ayurveda requires a lipophilic carrier to reach the Asthi Dhatu efficiently. A2 Gir Gau Ghee provides that carrier through its fat-soluble delivery mechanism, something that no calcium tablet or water-based supplement can replicate.
Beyond bone health, all five herbs in Panchtikta Ghrit are Tikta Rasa and specifically indicated in classical texts for skin disorders including eczema, psoriasis, and allergic skin conditions, as well as wound healing, ulcers, and Pitta-driven inflammatory conditions throughout the body.
